Drivers using the N2, N53 and N54 face a run of night and weekend closures over the coming weeks as Monaghan County Council carries out pavement repairs and maintenance. The council has published statutory notices for each closure under Section 75 of the Roads Act 1993. Diversions will be signed, and the notices say every effort will be made to keep delays down.
Tullyvin Roundabout, Castleblayney: three weekend closures
The N2 will close from its junction with the L4300 at Brackagh to the Tullyvin Roundabout at Castleblayney. The N53 will also close from the Tullyvin Roundabout to its junction with the R938 Dublin Road in Castleblayney. The closures run from 7pm on Friday until 6am on Monday on three weekends:
- Friday 16 October to Monday 19 October
- Friday 23 October to Monday 26 October
- Friday 6 November to Monday 9 November
The works are pavement repairs on the N2 and N53 approaches to the roundabout. Northbound traffic will be diverted at Brackagh east along the L4300 to the N53, north to Castleblayney and the R938, through the town via the R181 Main Street, then onto the R183 Monaghan Road to rejoin the N2 at the Muldrumman interchange.
Southbound traffic will leave the N2 at the Tullyskerry interchange and take the R181 west to Lough Egish. From there it goes south on the R180 to the R927 roundabout in Carrickmacross, then east on the R927 to the N2 roundabout. Local access will be provided.
Castleblayney Bypass: nightly closures, 19 October to 1 November
The N2 Castleblayney Bypass will close in both directions between the Lislanly N2 Roundabout and the Tullyvin (N53) Roundabout from 9pm to 6am each night, Monday 19 October to Sunday 1 November, for essential maintenance, renewal and safety works.
Northbound traffic will be diverted via the old N2 (N53) from Tullyvin roundabout through Castleblayney town, then onto the R983 and R183, rejoining the N2 at the Ballybay road junction. Southbound traffic will exit at the Lislanly roundabout onto the L3410, then take the R183 into Castleblayney and the R983 to the Tullyvin roundabout and the N2. Those dates overlap with the weekend closure at Tullyvin from 23 to 26 October.
N54 Monaghan to Clones: nightly, 18 October to 2 November
The N54 from Monaghan Town to Largy, Clones, will close at night (7pm to 6am) from Sunday 18 October to Monday 2 November inclusive. The council is carrying out pavement rehabilitation on the N54 at Smithborough. Westbound traffic will be diverted at the N54/R189 junction in Monaghan, south along the R189 through Threemilehouse to Newbliss, then north on the R183 to rejoin the N54 at Clones. Eastbound traffic follows the same route in reverse. Local access will be provided.
Local roads: Lisdoonan and the L-7870
In the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney Municipal District, the LP4102 through Lisdoonan village will close for road improvement works over a 1,556-metre stretch, from its junction at Drumlurg to the junction at Lisdoonan. The closure will last up to two weeks at some point between Monday 19 October and Friday 30 October. Local traffic will be diverted via adjoining roads, and local access and emergency vehicles will be catered for at all times.
The whole of the L-7870, from its junction with the L-4310 to the N53, may also close for up to four weeks between Monday 26 October and Monday 30 November so new connections can be made to the existing water main. Local diversions will be in place and local access maintained.
The notices were signed by Senior Engineer Paul Connolly. Monaghan County Council publishes all current closures on its Road Closures & Notices page.
